Scheffau am Wilder Kaiser (Austria)

Scheffau am Wilder Kaiser in short

  • Height: 750 metres
  • Accessible without the Autobahn sticker via the Kufstein-Süd exit
  • Peaceful village at the heart of the ski area
  • Ski playground for kids in the village

Scheffau am Wilder Kaiser is located at an altitude of 745 metres at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser. The village has a central location, about 20 minutes from the border at Kufstein. An Austrian toll sticker is not required to get here by car. Scheffau has an idyllic location, slightly off the main road, and is the smallest 'Kaiser village'. Winter sports options are extensive. For example, you can ski here on the slopes of SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental and enjoy hiking and cross-country skiing.

Scheffau: cosy village at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser

Scheffau is closest to the Wilder Kaiser of all the villages in the valley. The houses are built slightly uphill, and around them are a lot of forests. No matter where you stay, the snow-covered mountains' views are impressive time and again. Scheffau has an authentic feel and a friendly atmosphere. It is an excellent destination for families and lovers of peace and nature.

Skiing on the slopes of SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser – Brixental

From the centre of Scheffau, it is about a 5-minute drive to the valley station of the Brandstadl gondola. Still, you can also use the connecting slope with Pistenbully Shuttle-Service for the way back. The Brandstadl takes winter sports enthusiasts to the top of the mountain of the same name at 1650 metres in no time. There are several blue slopes and a children's area with childcare for the little ones. But you can also go in all directions to explore the rest of SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental. Head towards the Eiberg and Zinsberg to cross to Brixen, Hopfgarten and Westendorf, towards the Hohe Salve for the slopes above Söll and Itter or tour via the Hartkaiser and Astberg to Going and Ellmau. The more than 270 km of slopes offer something for everyone and make for great daily tours, such as the SkiWelt Tour. Scheffau itself has a small practice lift and piste in the village.

Cross-country skiing around the Wilder Kaiser

From Scheffau, you can access an extensive cross-country skiing network, which takes you around the Wilder Kaiser. In total, you have access to 65 kilometres of cross-country trails. Starting directly from Scheffau are the Sonnenloipe (3.8 km), Dorfloipe (1.2 km) and the connecting trail to Ellmau (3.6 km). The trails in the region are perfectly prepared, just like the ski slopes.

Hiking around Scheffau am Wilder Kaiser

The four Kaiser municipalities of Söll, Scheffau, Ellmau and Going offer over 140 kilometres of winter hiking trails. The Hintersteiner See route is an absolute must, but the walks in the valley are also worthwhile. These include a 5.8 km route to Söll, and you can hike the Rehbach route (3.8 km). The hiking trails are also ideal for snowshoeing, thus trying out this way of hiking. With the SkiWelt Wanderpas, you can use the gondolas from all SkiWelt villages twice a day for hiking routes at altitude.

Family-friendly Scheffau

Scheffau is an ideal destination for winter sports with children. The village has a small, free-access practice lift with a practice slope. It is perfect for little ones to practice and show their parents what they have learned during their lessons. In the KinderKaiserland, right at the mountain station of the Brandstadl gondola, children learn to make their first turns in the snow. Once they have mastered these well, they soon move further into the ski area. Also, it is home to the Schneepiraten Kids Club, where children aged 0 to 4 can get daycare. This way, as a parent, you can also hit the slopes yourself.

Good food, convivial après-ski

There are plenty of snug mountain huts and good restaurants in Scheffau. Right at the mountain station of the Brandstadl, the mountain restaurant serves Austrian delicacies such as Wiener Schnitzel and Kaiserschmarrn. The cosy Berggasthof Jochstubn is also a tip. There are several restaurants in the village where you can dine in the evening. Scheffau's après-ski is not exuberant but convivial. Right after skiing, you can have a drink at the Brandstadl valley station. In town, the Schusterbar is a tip.
