Tignes (France)

Based on 5 reviews

Tignes in short

  • Height: 1550 - 2100 metres
  • Snow is completely guaranteed
  • Linked to Val d'Isère
  • Ski in, ski out resort

Tignes consists of 5 ski resorts: Brévières (1550m), located at the bottom of the dam, Les Boisses located just above, and two more modern ski resorts, Val Claret and Le Lac (2100m), located a lot further up the mountain. The latest addition to this varied selection is Tignes 1800. The Tignes-Val d'Isère ski area, formerly called the Espace Killy, ranks among the best and most famous ski areas in the world. Thanks to the Grande Motte glacier, it's possible to ski at Tignes even in the summer months.

After the original village of Tignes was destroyed in 1952 in order to construct a dam, the inhabitants moved to the shores of the new lake. Today, the rebuilt, cosmopolitan and sports-oriented Tignes offers a unique ski holiday experience and allows you to enjoy the mountains from a different angle. This international ski resort allows you to ski well into spring. Tignes attracts a young crowd, meaning après-ski and nightlife are lively and bars and clubs stay open long into the night. Tignes 1800 is better suited for family ski holidays as the atmosphere is more relaxed. Getting to Tignes from the UK couldn't be easier. It's close to the Bourg Saint-Maurice stop on the Eurostar ski train, or alternately, just a 2-hour drive from Chambéry Airport.

“We spent a week in Tignes and had great snow, you could ski almost everywhere, both on-piste and next to the pistes. The slopes are nice and wide, which helps reduce crowds. We never had to wait longer than 5-10 minutes for a lift! Overall a super...”

Skiing at Tignes-Val d'Isère

Tignes is a high-altitude ski area with a rather lunar atmosphere in its treeless landscape. Slopes up to 3456m above sea level ensure great snow cover throughout the winter. Along with neighbouring Val d'Isère, the ski area has no less than 300km of ski slopes, including slalom courses, a mogul race run, several snow parks and one gliss'park - just to add more thrills to your day on the slopes. Tignes offers summer skiing with 20km of slopes on the Grande Motte glacier, but due to decreasing snow cover in recent years, the ski resort is contemplating building an indoor ski slope at 2000m above sea level.

Freeride and freestyle in Tignes

Tignes is the home of the Winter XGames Europe, an annual event that showcases the world's best freestylers. In keeping with this, Tignes boasts a world-class snow park with rails, a halfpipe XXL, JIB and other features for riders of all levels, as well as a 1200m-long boardercross track. Freeriders won't be disappointed either. To safely enjoy the pleasures of off-piste skiing in some of the world’s best powder, Tignes - true to its motto 100% snow sports, 100% fun - offers 10 black ski runs, secured but not groomed, just for the pleasure of powder hounds! These "Naturides" offer all the sensations of freeriding without the risk.

Après-ski scene in Tignes

For ski-in, ski-out après-ski at the foot of the slopes, head to the Cocorico or the Loop Bar, two hot addresses where you can get the party started in the afternoon. After nightfall, the Blue Girl and the Melting Pot are the places to be in Tignes - dance away the night in these popular nightclubs! Once a year, Tignes hosts the Live in Tignes music festival with free live music on the slopes and in the resort centre. Tignes is also the proud host of the European Snow Pride festival, a week-long celebration of the LGBTQTA community that takes place in early spring every year.

Off the slopes in Tignes

After a long day on the slopes, pamper yourself in the spa or take the kids for a dip in the pool. Other non-skiing activities at Tignes include ice diving in the frozen lake, ice climbing, paragliding, dogsledding, snowtubing, or just taking it all in from the comfort of a horse-drawn carriage. Kick your adrenaline up a notch with a ride on the Bun J Ride, which combines the thrills of ski jumping, bungee jumping and zipline. For a more relaxed activity, the ESF ski school in Tignes offers snowshoeing and cross-country skiing tours around its lake: this is a great activity to get in shape before attacking downhill skiing or just a peaceful alternative to the sometimes crowded ski slopes!

Tignes 1800: a new family ski resort

Conscious of the fact that the number of families with children coming to Tignes was decreasing, this world-class ski resort decided to react and pulled a new family ski resort out of its hat! The new ski resort at Tignes 1800 offers comfortable, modern ski accommodation, great facilities including a fantastic swimming pool and a special ski area with free lifts dedicated to beginners. The new fast gondola links to the main ski area at Tignes 2100 and the rest of the Espace Killy ski area linking to Val d’Isere. There is a quiet and pleasant atmosphere in Tignes 1800 which is at an altitude more suitable for the younger members of the family.
