Verbier (Switzerland)

Based on 4 reviews

Verbier in short

  • Height: 1500 metres
  • Stylish Swiss ski resort
  • Very sunny ski resort
  • Lively apres-ski

Verbier is the largest and most elegant ski resort in the Les 4 Vallées (Four Valleys) ski area in Switzerland, which connects the ski resorts of Verbier, La Tzoumaz, Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon-Les Collons. From the 3330m-high Mont Fort you are granted a splendid view of the Matterhorn, the Grand Combin and the Evasion Mont-Blanc, which you won't forget quickly. Thanks to their north-facing orientation, the slopes around the Lac des Vaux are often among the first in Switzerland to open for the season.

Verbier is internationally renowned for its class and style. Chalets, hotels, bars and shops are in abundance at Verbier - even Prince Andrew bought a chalet here! Verbier belongs to Les Quatre Vallées, the largest linked ski area to be 100% located in Switzerland with over 400km of slopes. The huge Quatre Vallées ski area is wonderfully challenging, with many ski touring and off-piste options. In fact, Verbier is a big name in the freestyling scene and regularly hosts the finals of the Freeride World Tour, known as Xtreme Verbier. Verbier is also famous for its off-piste skiing terrain, with a dozen extensive and accessible off-piste areas that are best explored with a guide. Verbier is about a 2-hour drive from Geneva Airport and is popular with British skiers.

World-class skiing in Les Quatre Vallées

The ski area is divided into four sections: Verbier, La Tzoumaz/Savoleyres, Bruson and Mont Fort/4 Valleys. The overwhelming majority of the pistes surrounding the village of Verbier are blue and red, making this a great area to build your skiing confidence. Sunny Savoleyres is popular with families, while neighbouring La Tzoumaz is home to a 10km-long slope with a vertical drop of 848m. Head to the Bruson ski area on snow days - with almost all the runs below the treeline, this is the best place to be if it's snowing sideways. And, of course, there's the lofty Mont Fort, gateway to the backcountry and home to some glacier skiing at the Col des Gentianes. As for freestyling, the snow park in la Chaux has freestyle features for all levels including kickers, rails, boxes, a mini half-pipe and a big air bag. Over in La Tzoumaz, the kids can start learning the joy of freestyling on the fun obstacles of the Audi Quattro funslope and the Taillay pistes. There is a well developed network of snowshoeing, winter hiking trails and cross-country skiing trails.

Kids aren't forgotten at Verbier

There are three nursery slopes in the village of Verbier where the kids can practise their skills before heading up to the easy slopes at La Chaux. When it's time for a break, the family-friendly Les Gentianes mountain restaurant welcomes children with a blow-up castle, trampoline and swingset. If you dare, you can take the kids for a spin on the luge piste, which at 834m long is the longest of its type in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Nurseries are available for the littlest tots and there is a plethora of ski schools to be found with English-speaking ski instructors which will make your life that much easier and your kids' introduction to skiing just that much better!

Après-ski with the jet set in Verbier

You're spoiled for choice when it comes to dining at Verbier. Savour a Swiss fondue at one of the majestic mountain terraces, or visit the Igloo bar perched at 3300m on Mont Fort, which has panoramic views of over 100 mountain peaks. Verbier guarantees a lively (and rather expensive) après-ski scene. If you don't want to blow your ski holiday budget on a nightclub, there are over 60 excellent restaurants to choose from where you can spend a pleasant evening with friends or family without having to stay up all night. You'll sleep well and be ready for another day on the slopes in Verbier.
